Relaxing at Cobbys Corner on Lord Howe Island

Contributed by Denis Corcoran: Cobbys Corner is the southern-most BBQ spot on Lord Howe and it’s tucked away in an idyllic and quiet corner of the island. In the right conditions with friends, family and a BBQ, there’s not many other places in the world you’d rather be.  …Read More

Fish feeding at Neds Beach on Lord Howe Island

Contributed by Pia Funch: Spending a day at Neds Beach on Lord Howe Island means spending a day in a pristine South Pacific sanctuary zone. Famous for its snorkelling, sea turtles, seabirds, surf, golden sand, BBQ areas and clear turquoise water, Neds Beach has something extravagantly unique to offer visitors. At Neds, the distinctive reef and coral thrive just a few metres from shore making the beach a snorkelling paradise. But you don’t have to get wet….. …Read More

Walking at Boat Harbour on Lord Howe Island

Contributed by Denis Corcoran

Seclusion. Space. Peace and quiet. Getting away from it all.

Seeking the opposite of hustle and bustle? The southern end of the island is just the tonic.

I’m at Rocky Run junction. The map mounted on the post in the ground tells me I’m a long way from my bike at the top of the airport strip.

1.1km Boat Harbour
2.4km Lagoon Road …Read More

Island wedding on Lord Howe Island

Contributed by Lena Thompson
Until the 11th January 2015, I had never been to a wedding. For the past 21 years of my life, I kept finding myself at funerals, over and over again. So I started wondering what I was doing wrong to be at funerals, instead of weddings. It turns out that there’s an aging population on Lord Howe and funerals just happen more often.  …Read More

Are you a hopeless romantic?

Posted by Dani Rourke – Sunday, February 22, 2015

Are you a hopeless romantic? I am, well … sort of. Luke doesn’t think that I’m romantic at all, because I get impatient watching sunsets (and looking at Luke’s seemingly endless sunset photos). But, in my defence, I’ve watched When Harry Met Sally about 300 times, and I never get sick of it. And when I meet a couple who are obviously totally in love with each other, I can’t help asking how they met.  …Read More

About Dani Rourke

HELP! I have 2 children, 25 staff and up to 75 guests. I was a lawyer for 10 years, but escaped. My husband and I moved from Sydney to beautiful Lord Howe Island to run Pinetrees Lodge, which has been in my family for 6 generations. I'm writing about family business, island life and the whole work/family disaster. Did someone say balance? When I'm not writing, my lovely staff do it for me - they see more of the island than I do.
