Fishing on Lord Howe Island

One benefit of a healthy marine ecosystem, protected breeding grounds and remote location is the immense number of fish in the waters around Lord Howe.

With the right fishing gear, some local knowledge and persistence, you can catch kingfish, yellowfin tuna, wahoo and a range of other big species from the shore. The most reliable fishing, though, is from one of the many charter boats. Fishing trips go to the Admiralty Islands, South West Bank, Balls Pyramid and a number of non-disclosed locations on most days. Experienced and devoted fisherman are regularly 'fished out'. There are a number of experienced fishing guides and boat operators.

Lagoon fishing for garfish, bluefish, trevally, kingfish and double headers is a fun activity for all ages, and provides excellent sport fishing and fly fishing. It wouldn't be a real Lord Howe holiday without a BBQ garfish sandwich at Cobbys Corner. Read the Locals' Guide to Lord Howe Island to learn more about our best fishing spots.

Meeting the wood hens on Lord Howe Island was the highlight of our stay. Without mobile phones and internet you can completely cut off from the world and relax. A unique and special place with beautiful surroundings and friendly people. Pinetrees Lodge was a perfect holiday destination with lovely food. We will be back.

Everything about my stay on Lord Howe Island was a highlight, the Goat Cave, Ned’s Beach, the walks. I had a very pleasant stay at Pinetrees Lodge and the food was delicious and the staff great.
Trevor, Mayfield

Our experience at Pinetrees Lodge was first class and we enjoyed top gourmet food every meal. The whole staff were wonderfully friendly and helpful. We enjoyed seeing and photographing the turtles and feeding the fish at Ned’s Beach.

Lord Howe Island is a step back in time to a gentler lifestyle, being able to leave doors unlocked, gear unattended and outdoor activity being the focus. Pinetrees staff goes out of their way to assist, serve and nothing is a bother to them. Food presentation and quality is a huge treat and I had the best time – Thank you!

The hosts at Pinetrees Lodge were great and the staff friendly, an unpretentious atmosphere. The standard of food is next to none.
Judith, Mosman NSW

The friendly atmosphere created at Pinetrees Lodge made our stay relaxing and very enjoyable. The food was excellent and served correctly and politely (which you don’t often see on the mainland). Keep doing what you are doing!
Faye & Maurie, Hamlyn Heights VIC

I can honestly recommend a holiday on Lord Howe Island and a stay at Pinetrees Lodge. Accommodation, food and staff are excellent and all facilities are available for a relaxing holiday whilst enjoying the peace and tranquillity of the natural habitat which remains unspoilt by development. This is our third trip to Lord Howe Island and stay at Pinetrees Lodge and we enjoy every minute. We can’t wait to return.
