Australian Geographic Expedition

Lunch on Mt Gower on Lord Howe Island

Lord Howe Island is a gem of the natural world. Its dramatic scenery, lush subtropical forests, rare flora and fauna, pristine beaches and colourful marine life are breathtaking and unique. Sir David Attenborough once wrote that Lord Howe is “so extraordinary it is almost unbelievable… Few islands, surely, can be so accessible, so remarkable, yet so unspoilt.”

Lord Howe is also relatively undiscovered. Vast areas of World Heritage wilderness are rarely visited or researched. Like the Galapagos, new species will continue to be discovered by those with the expertise and patience to look.

The Australian Geographic Expedition is for ‘citizen scientists’ to work with scientists from Australian Geographic, the CSIRO and the Lord Howe Island Board. With expert support, people with a good level of fitness (i.e walk 5km in 1.5 hours and be steady footed in steep mountain terrain) and interest in conservation (i.e. you don’t need any scientific training!) can help discover insect species, which are thought to be extinct, or close to extinct. Many species remain undescribed or unrecorded since 1978, so the expedition stands to make a significant contribution to conservation on Lord Howe Island. Read the review of the 2016 Australian Geographic Expedition to Lord Howe Island.

After a memorable day, you’ll return to Pinetrees for a hot shower, sunset drink, exceptional 4 course dinner, great wine and comfortable bed. You may find the perfect balance between physical exercise, mental stimulation, social interaction and, well, some of life’s more enjoyable treats. And there’s no mobile phone coverage on Lord Howe!

The Australian Geographic Expedition includes:

  • 7 nights' accommodation at Pinetrees Lodge

  • 6 days of invertebrate field research with breaks for seabird and coral surveys

  • hands-on training from CSIRO scientists

  • full breakfasts

  • lunches (either at Pinetrees, gourmet BBQ hamper or packed lunch)

  • afternoon teas

  • 4 or 5 course dinners

  • island airport transfers

The Expedition will run from 15-22 October 2017. Packages start from $4,078.00 (per person twin share in a Transit Hill Room), excluding airfaresPlease contact us for more information or to make a booking.
