BOB GREAVES REVIEWS FIREWORKS AT PINETREES 2009

Lord Howe Island Jazz August 2009

Marion and I enjoyed the “best ever” jazz week at Pinetrees on Lord Howe Island during the last week in August. How could you not enjoy seven nights of Ian Smiths’ recreated Fireworks Jazz Band., with a line up of Smithy, Chis Ludowyk, Jo Stevenson, Richard Opat. Mark Elton, Jeff Arthur and Johnny Adams! Each night just got better and better.  Fancy having superb Jazz on Paradise Island!

The format was the whole band played from 6 until dinner at 7 (usually ending with Emperor Norton or Dr Jazz)’. The “after Dinner boys” consisting of the rhythm section and Johnny Adams  playing from 8.30 until 9 then the whole band played 8 until about 10 15.
There were many highlights during the seven days, Jo’s children playing the drums, Mark polishing the strings of his base each night, Smithy actually forgetting the words of a song (Old fashioned love), the beautiful cornet solo from Ian in Creole Love Call and the supreme experience of Jeff playing his guitar into a Hawaiian steel guitar with a bottle of Boags beer on “Song of the Islands” It was so successful he repeated it two nights later.

It would be hard to find a group of Australian musicians who worked so well together playing such a wide selection of popular Tin Pan Ally and Jazz tune and you could not go wrong with a rhythm section like that supporting such a superb front line.

A typical night had this selection of music.
“San Antonio Rose”, “Someday Sweetheart”, “Always” (to serenade a 30th wedding anniversary)  “Moon River” , “Any Time”, (with the duo washboards and Jo going full throttle) and  ending with “Emperor Norton’s Hunch”,  the band standing for the final section).  This is traditional homage to Tom Baker who originally had this spot on LHI…..

Dinner  …The After Dinner Boys playing much more mellow stuff  like “Samba Wazola”?, “That Old Feeling”, “This Time the Dream is on Me”,   “Even Tide”  and “You Can’t Take That Away From Me”

At 9 the front line returned top finish the night with “ Maree” (Chis out did Tommy Dorsey), “Tishamingo Blues” , “Everywhere You Go” ( dedicated to Marion) Jo’s solo on “Burgundy St Blues”, “Don’t Get Around Much Any More”, “Bourbon St Parade”, The birthday song for a  lovely lady “You Must Have Been a Beautiful Baby” then another superb Ellington piece  “Black and Tan Fantasy” finishing up the night with “Who Walks In When I Walk Out”

Pinetrees Guest house hosts 4 bands during winter but Fireworks, who end the season, have to be the best. They have been invited back same time in 2010. We will return again to as I also spend two or three days teaching the local school next door.
