surfing
Shallow coral reef in the middle of the Pacific Ocean means one thing - waves. Lord Howe picks up powerful groundswell from the Southern and Pacific oceans throughout the year. There are ten regularly surfed waves, and some are world-class on their day. In small conditions, there's something for everyone. Wind and tides are the limiting factor, but there's nearly always somewhere that's offshore. That's the beauty of an island!
There's a surf shop, Larrups, in the 'CBD' and a small selection of boards are available for hire. You're best to bring your own boards - which will be marked "excess" at the airport and may not travel with you. Be prepared to paddle (or kayak) up to 1km to access the best surf spots. It's not for the faint hearted, but the rewards are, well, reef plus swell equals...
"The beautiful, gourmet dinners had with family and Pinetrees friends, sitting on the lovely, wide verandah have to be a highlight of our stays. "
