The Lord Howe Island golf course may only be 9 holes, but it's one of the most spectacular golf courses in Australia. With the turquoise colours of the lagoon on one side and two of Australia's most dramatic mountains on the other, the course is coffee table book material. The current greenkeeper is from Royal Sydney Golf Club and has transformed the course into a challenging experience for novice and experienced golfers alike. The undulating fairways are meticulously maintained and are regularly dotted with sand, water and bush hazards. A number of holes have significant vertical falls, making club selection a challenge. Add some wind, and you'll find it hard to play to your handicap. The biggest challenge, though, is the greens. Many guests comment that the greens are the best that they've played on – very deceptive.

The Lord Howe Island Gold Club hosts a 9 hole 'Chicken Run' on Friday afternoons, and an 18 hole competition on Sundays. It's a great way to meet locals. The dress code is casual (like the rest of Lord Howe) and visitors are welcome. Clubs are available for hire any time of day. Please contact 02 6563 2054 or visit  www.lordhowegolf.com.au.
